How it all Happens

Ask anyone who’s bought one – a puppy raised in our home is SPECIAL. No matter how great the pedigree, no matter how wonderful the parents are - the environment during the pregnancy and the very important weeks following the birth have a lasting, unalterable affect on how your puppy will behave when you get him to his new home - including his attitude, personality and intelligence as a grown up dog!

Our puppies are whelped and raised in our home with their first week being spent just sleeping and eating, with our family always close by and watching!  As they grow older, we clip their toenails while they nurse on mom. By 3 weeks of age, these pups have already begun their housebreaking! What we do from here on will teach a puppy to be clean in your house. During the next 2 weeks, our puppies are in the middle of a very busy household. People are coming and going, pots and pans are being dropped, the vacuum cleaner is being busily used, the sound of the washer and dryer are preparing clean, warm blankets to sleep on, the television is blaring, etc., etc. The puppies are constantly being picked up, cuddled and rocked, carried and held everywhere and anywhere.  Our all time favourite is to snuggle a couple of puppies each while watching TV at night!

By 5 weeks of age, we have found a puppy is much more pliable about being separated from Mom and litter-mates while still at the breeders. They learn to be self confident in familiar surroundings which helps when they are alone. One by one, they are taken to other places in the house for an hour or so, with food and water. They adapt quickly and if they cry, it's only for a short time. We repeat this off and on up to 7 weeks old – this prepares the puppy for its first night away at his/her new home. He/she usually doesn't cry because he’s not unhappy and being alone is old hat and hasn't been an unpleasant experience. The new owners are very happy with a WELL-ADJUSTED, quiet puppy.

By the puppy’s 5th and 6th week we begin the leash training. At this age, they have a natural following instinct which makes the beginning easy. "Come" when called? That’s an easy one! From 3 weeks on every time they are fed, we call aloud with a happy voice "Come Puppies!", so at 6 weeks they ALL come running!  We also start calling them by name when they are alone, that is if we know what their names are going to be!  This makes the early stages of training in their new homes that much easier.

Around this same time, comes the bathing, continued toenail clipping, grooming, playing, etc. Of course there is also the intelligence testing, etc. Full Time? Yes, but everyone benefits from all the love and care - the puppy, the new owner and of course us!  What better way to spend our time - raising such awesome creatures!

HAPPY PUPPY RAISING!

January 27, 2006 Litter - Alex and Max

PUPPIES ARRIVED LATE JANUARY!!!  Alex did it again!  She sure is a trooper!  8 wonderful puppies have arrived safe and sound - 2 boys and 6 girls!

The delivery was almost uneventful - her water broke at 2:30pm on January 27th and then the pushing began at 3:30pm.  Well the first puppy was a male stillborn at 5:00pm  It is always hard starting a delivery that way and makes for a very stressful time - for me anyway!  Alex kept on going just like the trooper she is and had 7 more puppies by 7:30pm.  I gave her a shot of oxytocen at 8:10pm to make sure everything was over and to help clean her out.  I put everything away, cleaned her bed and started a load of laundry.  I even made a few phone calls to let some key people know that things were over and just as I was heading to the phone one more time, out popped another puppy  Luckily, he was alive and kicking and is now doing just great!

Anyway, pictures of Alex and Max are below and then the link to the puppy photos below that...

What a smile! - Doesn't he look like he is smiling for the camera?

February 1, 2005 - Alex and Haver Litter

Alex did it again!!!  Another great litter of 10 puppies born February 1, 2005!!  Well, it wasn't quite uneventful - Alex had a little trouble again after the 9th puppy.  After giving her 3 doses of Oxytocen to get the contractions going again, still nothing but some random contractions, so off to the vet at 1:30 in the morning and she had x-rays showing one puppy still in there.  Her uterus was just too tired to get that last one out!  Under the knife she went and an emergency C-section was done to get that last puppy out.  I was prepared for the worst and thought for sure after almost 4 hours there was no chance that the puppy would be alive, but we had our MIRACLE pup - the one with the white ribbon was born at 2:40 am on February 2, 2005 and amazingly was alive.  It took a little extra attention to get her breathing and a lot of work to keep her breathing, but she is here and doing very well!!!!!!  She must be a very special little girl and a real fighter!!

Anyway, enough talking - you have to check out the link below for great photos of Alex before, during and after the pups were born.....

February 4, 2004 Litter - Alex and Max

With our first breeding (March 2003) so successful, we bred Alex (Camgold Alex) to Max (Kantung Nugget of Gold) again.  Max belongs to a fellow breeder friend of mine.  You can see photos of Max on our "Meet the Clan" page.

Alex and Max were the proud parents of another 8 puppies.  6 males and 2 females born between 10:30 am and 6:40 pm on Wednesday, February 4, 2004.  Mom did very well and all 8 puppies were healthy and very cute!  Most of the puppies were over a pound at birth and all were over 2 pounds at 1 week old and 3 pounds at 2 weeks old!

March 20, 2003 Litter - Alex and Max

Alex (Camgold Alex) and Max (Kantung Nugget of Gold) were bred for the first time and had 9 great puppies - 6 males and 3 females!  All puppies did very well and have all gone to their new homes!

Mom:  Alex

Dad:  Max

Unfortunately, I didn't own a digital camera at the time, so here are some shots of the puppies at 7 weeks old!

Our 1st Two Litters

Before Cody and Jade retired, they had two wonderful litters - the first one in 2001 and the second in 2002.  Although I don't have any good photos of Jade, you can see photos of Cody on our Meet the Clan page.  It has been hard, but since both are retired and we don't have a lot of space, Jade went to live with a great family in Elora, Ontario and Cody went to live with a great retired couple in Collingwood, Ontario.  This was a very tough decision and was even harder to do when the time came, but they really did deserve to be the only dog in a home and get the attention and even more love that they so richly deserved!  I will continue to keep in touch with both families to see how my first 2 goldens are doing as they age.  I really wish I lived in the country and had more space so that I could keep them all!

Something to Think About!!

Thanks to Lida Verner for letting me use some of the great stories from her website.  This one brought tears to my eyes, but definitely worth reading!

Pet Store Puppy

I don’t remember much from the place I was born.  It was cramped and dark, and we were never played with by the humans.  I remember Mom and her soft fur, but she was often sick, and very thin.  She had hardly any milk for me and my brothers and sisters.  I remember many of them dying, and I missed them so.

So many sights and sounds, and smells!  We are in a store where there are many different animals!  Some that squawk!  Some that meow!  Some that Peep!  My sister and I are jammed into a small cage, I hear other puppies here.  I see humans look at me, I like the ‘little humans’, the kids.  They look so sweet and fun, like they would play with me!  All day we stay in the small cage, sometimes mean people will hit the glass and frighten us, every once in a while we are taken out to be held or shown to humans.  Some are gentle, some hurt us, we always hear “Aw they are so cute! I want one!” but we never get to go with any.

My sister died last night, when the store was dark.  I lay my head on her soft fur and felt the life leave her small thin body.  I had heard them say she was sick, and that I should be sold at a “discount price” so that I would quickly leave the store.  I think my soft whine was the only one that mourned for her as her body was taken out of the cage in the morning and dumped.

Today a family came and bought me! Oh happy day! They are a nice family, they really, really wanted me! They had bought a dish and food and the little girl held me so tenderly in her arms. I love her so much!  The mom and dad say what a sweet and good puppy I am! I am named Angel.  I love to lick my new humans!

The family takes such good care of me, they are loving and tender and sweet.  They gently teach me right and give me good food, and lots of love!  I want only to please these wonderful people! I love the little girl and I enjoy running and playing with her. Today I went to the veterinarian.  It was a strange place and I was frightened.  I got some shots, but my best friend the little girl held me softly and said it would be OK.  So I relaxed.  The Vet must have said sad words to my beloved family, because they looked awfully sad.  I heard severe hip dysplasia, and something about my heart… I heard the vet say something about back yard breeders and my parents not being tested. I know not what any of that means, just that it hurts me to see my family so sad.  But they still love me, and I still love them very much!

I am 6 months old now. Where most other puppies are robust and rowdy, it hurts me terribly just to move.  The pain never lets up.  It hurts to run and play with my beloved little girl, and I find it hard to breath.  I keep trying my best to be the strong pup I know I am supposed to be, but it is so hard.  It breaks my heart to see the little girl so sad, and to hear the mom and dad talk about “it might now be the time”.  Several times I have gone to that veterinarians place, and the news is never good.  Always talk about congenital problems.  I just want to feel the warm sunshine and run, and play and nuzzle with my family.

Last night was the worst, pain has been my constant companion now, it hurts even to get up and get a drink.  I try to get up but can only whine in pain.  I am taken in the car one last time.  Everyone is so sad, and I don’t know why.  Have I been bad?  I try to be good and loving, what have I done wrong?  Oh if only this pain would be gone!  If only I could soothe the tears of the little girl.  I reach out my muzzle to lick her hand, but can only whine in pain.

The veterinarian’s table is so cold.  I am so frightened.  The humans all hug and love me, they cry into my soft fur.  I can feel their love and sadness.  I manage to lick softly their hands.  Even the vet doesn’t seem so scary today. He is gentle and I sense some kind of relief for my pain.  The little girl holds me softly and I thank her, for giving me all her love.  I feel a soft pinch in my foreleg.  The pain is beginning to lift, I am beginning to feel a peace descend upon me.  I can now softly lick her hand. My vision is becoming dreamlike now, and I see my Mother and my brothers and sister, in a far off green place.  They tell me there is no pain there, only peace and happiness.  I tell the family, good-bye in the only way I know how, a soft wag of my tail and a nuzzle of my nose.  I had hoped to spend many, many moons with them, but it was not meant to be.  “You see,” said the veterinarian, “Pet shop puppies do not come from ethical breeders.  The pain ends now, and I know it will be many years until I see my beloved family again.  If only things could have been different.
